API GL-4 vs. API GL-5 Gear Oil: The Real Difference

Choosing between API GL-4 and API GL-5 gear oil isn’t about upgrading to a “better” spec—it’s about matching the additive package to the mechanical design of your gearbox or differential.

Key Differences & Additive Chemistry

  • API GL-4: Formulated for manual transmissions and transaxles operating under moderate speeds and loads. Contains roughly 1.5% to 2% extreme-pressure (EP) additives (primarily sulfur-phosphorus compounds).
  • API GL-5: Formulated for high-load, severe-duty hypoid gear differentials. Contains roughly 3% to 4.5% EP additives—roughly double the concentration of GL-4—to prevent gear teeth from scuffing under extreme sliding friction.

Wear Dynamics & Misapplication Risks

1. Do NOT use GL-5 in Manual Transmissions with Yellow Metals (Unless MT-1 / Dual-Rated Approved)

  • Chemical Wear (Corrosion): The active sulfur-phosphorus EP additives in GL-5 bond aggressively to soft non-ferrous metals (brass and bronze synchronizer rings). Under heat and pressure, this protective sacrificial coating shears off, tearing microscopic layers of soft yellow metal away with it. Over time, this causes rapid synchro erosion and brass debris in oil samples.
  • Synchronizer Slippage: GL-5 oils are generally too slick for manual synchros to achieve the friction required for smooth engagement, leading to gear clash, hard shifting, and premature dog teeth wear.

2. Do NOT use GL-4 in Hypoid Gear Differentials

  • Adhesive Wear & Scuffing: Hypoid gear sets feature significant pinion offset, creating severe sliding and contact pressure across gear teeth. GL-4 lacks the additive concentration required to maintain extreme-pressure surface protection, leading to tooth pitting, spalling, and rapid mechanical failure under load.

Quick Selection Guide

Application
Recommended Spec
Why?
Manual Transmissions / Transaxles
API GL-4
Protects soft brass synchros and provides proper coefficient of friction for gear shifts.
Hypoid Differentials (Rear Axles)
API GL-5
High EP additive concentration handles high sliding loads and contact pressure.
Dual-Rated (GL-4/GL-5 or MT-1)
Check OEM Spec
Formulated with inactive/buffered EP additives safe for yellow metals, but friction characteristics may still cause stiff shifting in sensitive synchros.
